In the wider area of Udin boršt, there are the opportunities for fishing on Tržiška Bistrica, on the Sava River, Žeje and Race Ponds, as well as Bobovška Lakes. Due to the special status and partially unsettled (equity) relations, it is recommended that you contact the Fishing Family Kranj and enquire about the current state prior to fishing in the Race Ponds and Bobovška Lakes.
The Fishing Family Tržič is managing Tržiška Bistrica and its tributaries, the Sava River from the mouth of Tržiška Bistrica to the dam in the Majdič Canal with the tributaries and Žeje Ponds. These waters that are also intended for sport fishing are highly salmonid, populated by brook trout, rainbow trout and grayling. While in the Sava River, capital Danube salmons reign, as well. The Fishing Family Kranj is managing the Race Fishing Pond.
Tržiška Bistrica
Tržiška Bistrica is a 27-km-long river, which rises above the town Jelendol in Karavanke (1,460 metres above sea level), near the Slovenian–Austrian border. It runs through Tržič and flows into the Sava River near Podbrezje as a left tributary (370 metres above sea level). Its river basin measures 146 km² and is rich in fish, predominately trout.
One can fish on Tržiška Bistrica from the bridge above the castle in Jelendol to the mouth of the Sava River. Mošenik and all its other tributaries are rearing streams, and fish rearing reserves are also in all water canals and ravines. You get the right to fish in the Tržiška Bistrica preserve, which is managed by the Fishing Family Tržič, by purchasing the fishing license. Before that, you should familiarise yourselves with the rules of fishing.

Žeje Ponds
The two ponds in Bistrica near Naklo enable fishing experience for experienced or amateur fishermen and families all year round. The three ponds with a total area of approx. 1.5 ha is managed by the Fishing Family Tržič. A fishing home was built here in 1998 and it is extremely popular among visitors due to the tasty fish dishes.
In the two ponds, it is possible to catch carp, tench, pike, perch, carp and small fish, and in the trout pond, it is also possible to catch rainbow trout. Fishing is permitted in the lower two ponds, and you get the right to it by purchasing the daily fishing permits and following certain rules regarding the timing and method of fishing.

Race Ponds (Račnik)
Through the central part of Udin boršt, the Želinjski Stream is flowing in many meanders. It rises in the central part of the Udin boršt low plateau and flows into Parovnica – Rupovščica at Tenetiše, after about 5 km. In a part of the stream in this rearing stream, the fishermen and hunters built a dam and the two picturesque Race Ponds were formed. The initial dam was built by the hunters in the 1960s for the nesting of ducks, and by agreement, the Fishing Family Kranj raised the embankment and an artificial lake with the length of about 120 m and the width of 70 m appeared. Its level is 424 metres above sea level, and the maximum depth reaches about 2.5 m. In the summer, the water warms up to 25 ̊C, and in winter, the lake is frozen for several months.
Among the fish in the ponds, dace, chub and brown trout prevailed before carp and tench. Roach and rudd were often brought into the water. There are also some grass carp and pike in the pond. All of these fish are in different abundance living in the ponds now and can be caught by fishing, except for brown trout. The ponds are managed by the Fishing Family Kranj and the Hunting Family Udin boršt. Like for all other fishing areas, you also need a fishing permit for this area.
Beside the fish, the most numerous inhabitants are mallard ducks on the upper pond. Despite the depth of only 2.5 m and large variations in temperature, toads, frogs, newts and numerous marshy plants are found here.
Access from Naklo is possible from the Bolero Guesthouse, from where you proceed under the highway through the Cegelnica village (the total of 2 km). Another option is the path from Strahinj, from where it is around 1.5 km to reach the ponds.
Access from Kranj is possible from the turning off the road Kranj–Golnik before Tenetiše, where after approximately 2.5 km of gravel forest road past the former Komunala Kranj junkyard you reach the lower pond.
Lakes in Bobovek
Čukova Jama Lakes, Ledvička and Krokodilnica in Bobovek were formed after the water filling of the former clay pit. If considering the surface, the largest is the Krokodilnica Lake, the Čukova Jama Lake follows and the smallest is the Ledvička Lake. It lies east of Krokodilnica, but is today heavily overgrown with rushes and other plants, and thus poorly visible. The area of the clay pit comprised of approximately 9 ha, of which 4 ha were water surfaces. Following the closure, the shoreline was quickly overgrown by many plants, primarily those typical of marshy areas. In this area, more than 230 species of plants were discovered later. Since the area is peaceful and quiet, it has begun to attract animals, especially birds that found shelter in the rush and treetops for themselves and their nests.
Today, it is the corner of tranquillity for nature lovers and a permanent or temporary home to over 110 species of birds; there were also as many as 140 species recorded.
When digging clay, they found the remains of a mammoth here, one of the largest Ice Age mammals. Today, there is a sculpture at the roundabout at Kokrica to remind us of it.
The lakes have been a very popular fishing point since their creation, also because of their proximity to Kranj. However, the excavations in 1965 had shown a much longer fish history of this region. At that time, they found fossil remains of a flock of dace at a depth of 8 m. They were supposed to be around 180,000 years old.
Today, several species of native and non-native fish live in the lakes, such as: pike, carp, perch, rudd, etc. In the past, the Fishing Family has for the purposes of fishing invested up to 2,000 carp; unfortunately, grass carp inhabited the lakes. This type of fish removes and destroys underwater vegetation and rush that supply the pond with oxygen. Since they have already destroyed it pretty much, we can talk about natural damage and danger to the existence of the ecosystem in the lakes.
Due to the above-mentioned ornithological, paleontological and other peculiarities, the Municipal Assembly Kranj adopted a decree in 1981 on the protection of the lakes with their surrounding area in Bobovek near Kranj, and the lakes were declared a natural landmark.

Winter activities
In winter, Udin boršt gets calmer, the nature prepares itself for the winter rest, since it is every year, at least for a short period of time, covered with snow. Usually, the snow remains in shady locations, in ravines and sinkholes, from December or January until late spring. During this time, there are fewer opportunities for various activities, but there are still some to be found for the most active and the greatest nature lovers. Due to the silence and tranquillity of the winter time, these moments may be even more special.
In the fields at the villages surrounding Udin boršt, there are cross-country skiing trails prepared in winter months. In the Jumping Centre in Sebenje, you can occasionally watch ski jumping. These are performed on ski jumps that "lean" right on the steep terrace of Udin boršt.
Despite the colder weather and earlier nights, various events and festivals still happen. In early January, you can enjoy the traditional night hike with torches from Duplje to the Curved Fir Tree point, and live Christmas crib in Sebenje has become traditional. Throughout the year, you can join a 6-kilometre "Following the Paths of Three Bells" march each Friday afternoon.
