Local communities in the Udin boršt area

Local communities in the Udin boršt area
Hard-working local people, schools and especially various local communities can take the credit for organising different events with cultural, natural science, tourism, educational or simply social connotation in a larger area of Udin boršt. Among the ones who are active in the surrounding villages, there are many who organise their events on the brinks or inside this island of green nature in lower Gorenjska region.

Cultural and tourism society Pod krivo jelko Duplje
Cultural and tourism society called Pod krivo jelko (under the bent fir tree) in Duplje which comprises of Spodnje Duplje, Zgornje Duplje and Zadraga was established in 1998. The initiative to form this society was made in 1996 when people from Duplje prepared a celebration, a 750-year anniversary of when their village was first mentioned in writing (March 23, 1246). The need to mobilise all enthusiastic and active people who would be willing to promote the area and create its new image developed into forming the society. They got their name after a historical story's title Pod krivo jelko from 1923 written by a writer, publicist and priest Peter Bohinjec, a priest in Duplje (1913 – 1919).

The society is aware of the fact that without good cultural programme the tourism cannot develop and thus choose culture and tourism, and combining both, as their two main activities.

They organised a lot of successful events in honour of the anniversary such as Duplje wedding and artists' colony. The first ethnological museum was opened in Vogvar House in Spodnje Duplje. Duplje was most known for shoemaking from end of the 19th century to the World War II. In its most prosperous times there were around 120 shoemakers in area with 750 to 800 inhabitants. It's no wonder they found a lot of old shoemaking tools in the attics of local people a few decades later. Apart from demonstrating what interior of old houses looked like (also the so called black kitchen) and exhibiting various tools, there is also a shoemaker's workshop.
Being aware of the fact that the village can promote itself only with the help of successful tourism and ethnological events, they started to do so. First, they organised a wedding typical for Duplje area in the past. The criteria for choosing the right couple are very strict that is why only three weddings happened so far. The next project was artists' colony which turned into EX-TEMPORE, a successful traditional event.
The local community draws inspiration for its activities from the historical figures called Brigands (Rokovnjači) who wandered around Udin boršt and surrounding villages in the 19th century. The locals reprinted the story Pod krivo jelko written by the aforementioned priest Peter Bohinjec who lived there. After extensive search through the parish chronicle, Bohinjec found lots of information on life in the past and wrote a story about Brigands in Carniola. Based on Brigands folk tradition they choose Udin boršt, named Kriva jelka in those times, as their favourite hiding place.

The local community set up a wooden cottage, benches and playground equipment, a pleasant point for visitors. It has become very popular among locals and visitors. More than 18,000 people from all around Slovenia and more than 10 foreign countries sign the visitors' book every year. Every second or third Sunday in May they organise spring "finfranje"which means in Brigand language a feast because every year at the beginning of spring they were looking forward to the end of winter which meant easier survival for them, so they had to celebrate that. Every year several hundred people get together that time of the year to walk to Kriva jelka, socialise, eat goulash and other culinary specialties prepared by local housewives.

A nice and well-marked circular hiking trail, which leads to Kriva jelka, starts and ends at Trnovc farm. It is intended for locals and visitors and is appropriate for anyone in any season. It is possible to walk the entire length in three hours. It includes several interesting points showing countryside management, forest landscape and cultural heritage.Annual events organised by Cultural and tourism society Pod krivo jelko Duplje:

  • a guided fire torch hike to Kriva jelka (the first or second Saturday in January)
  • "finfranje" feast under Kriva jelka (the second or third Sunday in May)
  • ex-tempore in Duplje mansion (the second Saturday in October)
  • the merry autumn in the firefighter centre (the third Saturday in October)

Kokrica tourism society
Kokrica tourism society way established in 1971 and has been functioning independently since 1972. Udin boršt hunting club

Udin boršt hunting club has a long history of hunters' unification and cooperation. Nowadays hunters are mostly concentrated on taking care of game, its biological and ecological stability and habitat.

It all began at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century when hunting clubs started. After the World War II they renewed the club and in 1952 Udin boršt hunting club was established. They are in charge of 4600 ha of hunting area and currently there are 85 members among which 12 are hunting guards. Several members have passed the test for inspectors, several are head of hunt, mentors and shooting competition referees. Udin boršt hunting club has four facilities: hunting cabin Za Savo, cabin Fazanerija, Račnjak and cabin in Veterno which serves as a meeting place for all members. Concession contract gives them the right to manage 4334.08 ha of hunting area and they are obliged to carry out annual hunting and management plans, annual cull and other tasks.

What kind of game and other animals can be seen in this area? The artificial lake in the centre of Udin boršt offers suitable conditions for mallard breeding and the surrounding terrain is suitable for small game breeding. The most numerous is deer which populates the entire hunting area. On the slopes of Kriška gora mountain there is a small number of chamoises and mouflons and occasionally deer and wild boars. Some game species are protected, also birds of prey and crows which unfortunately make a lot of damage to lettuce crops.
To carry out all the tasks, hunters have to do 30 hours of voluntary work and some of them would exceed 100 hours. No matter how much work they do, it is worth every minute, because they enjoy walking around the hunting area, watching animals and they enjoy calm and clean nature.
